A Dental Donation

Emily Solis, 4, wasn't sure about the large X-ray camera aimed at her mouth, but at least the Plano child had a comfortable teal chair in which to recline for her first dental visit Thursday. The chair was donated by a Plano endodontist (a root canal specialist) to better serve the hundreds of uninsured and low-income Collin County children treated at the Community Dental Center of Plano each year.

The chair boosts the center's treatment areas to four instead of three, so patients don't have to wait as long. It isn't new, but you can't tell. "That chair is in excellent condition; it's really nice," said Cindy Gay, the dentist in charge of the Plano clinic. "It's not just an old hand-me-down that somebody has had in their office for 20 years."

Last week was its first in use at the nonprofit dental center. Staff didn't waste any time bolting it down, although it will be awhile before the plumbing is installed to make it fully operational. Paul Hoffmann, executive director of Community Dental Care, which runs the facility, said it would have cost the center about $25,000 for a similar setup - money it did not have. But William Bolak, the root canal specialist, said he was glad to help. The extra chair had been rarely used since another doctor who worked in his office moved away. "I like what they're doing for the working poor. A lot of the people fall between the cracks and wouldn't get help, especially the kids," said Dr. Bolak, one of a few specialists who also donates his time to treat difficult cases at the clinic. "I'd rather give it to them than try to sell it."
